Poem Review

Poem Review

Last week I read and memorized a beautiful poem by Christina Rossetti:
A Birthday
My heart is like a singing bird
                  Whose nest is in a water'd shoot;
My heart is like an apple-tree
                  Whose boughs are bent with thickset fruit;
My heart is like a rainbow shell
                  That paddles in a halcyon sea;
My heart is gladder than all these
                  Because my love is come to me.

Raise me a dais of silk and down;
                  Hang it with vair and purple dyes;
Carve it in doves and pomegranates,
                  And peacocks with a hundred eyes;
Work it in gold and silver grapes,
                  In leaves and silver fleurs-de-lys;
Because the birthday of my life
                  Is come, my love is come to me.

In this poem, Christina Rossetti used such clever rhymes to describe how she felt about this one certain birthday. She used very descriptive words and used them in such an incredible way. I felt really accomplished after I memorized this poem because I feel that this poem really comes from the heart and it shows how someone feels about someone or something else. This poem can be interpreted in many ways as well and that is what I find most interesting. It makes me really think and wonder how her heart is connected to all of the ways she is describing it. A Birthday is a very happy poem and it kind of reminds me about all the beautiful things she is mentioning in the poem. It makes me actually notice how pretty and happy the singing bird is and how intricate the apple tree is with its “boughs bent with thickest fruit.” She also mentions that her love has come to her, so she might have been talking about someone she loved coming to one of her birthdays. This poem has so many interesting parts and now I am more willing to read more of Christina Rossetti’s work.

HOLIDAYS!!

I love the holiday seasons. Everything is so happy and bright and colorful. I love seeing all the Christmas lights on everyone’s houses and the wreaths on everyone’s doors. I love spending time with all my family and friends as well. But my favorite part is obviously getting gifts from everyone. Whether it’s from a secret Santa or one of your family members or best friends, presents are always a plus to every holiday. Every Christmas Eve my family gets together at either my aunt’s house or my grandma’s house for dinner and everything. Christmas is usually the only time I get to see some of my family members so its kind of a nice thing to be able to see everyone. And also everyone has to bring one gift and we do that Chinese exchange game. Every person brings in a present and you get a number and you go in order and pick a present. Anyone can steal your present for them self or pick a new one.  We also try and go to our house in North Carolina as much as possible and around the holidays is a great time to go. There is fresh, white snow spread all over the ground and because we live in Florida, I love being able to see all the snow. Another thing my family and I do is sledding. Our house is on a huge mountain so we can sled down and it is such a blast. I love being able to do all of the winter things that we cannot normally do in the hot and humid south Florida weather. I honestly wish that Christmas was all year round. It would be so much better.

Penelope

It has been twenty years since I have seen my beloved husband Odysseus. Twenty years of not knowing where he was, what he was doing, if he was living or not. When he first left I did not know what to do with my self. I knew that I had to keep strong for Telemachus especially. I did not know how hard it was going to be doing so at the time though. I knew from the start too there would be other men as well and I had to keep pushing them away. I had to stay strong for Odysseus no matter what happens. I knew he would be okay because he’s such a strong and brave man to begin with. He could easily fight off any harm that came his way. He is such a good leader as well and he is very noble and knows what he’s doing. I just had to keep telling myself that everyday hoping he would return home soon. When he finally did, I couldn’t control my emotions. I didn’t know what to think or how to react. But finally, after twenty years, I was relieved from this pain and this uncomfortable feeling I had. All is well again, and Odysseus is well and safely home.

Class Expectations for Trimester One

In the first trimester of this year I think that all of the class expectations were met. Mr. Parsons did grade fairly and he was also friendly. He did prepare study guides and also gave us help when we needed it. The students’ expectations were also met. We all weren’t fully prepared one hundred percent of the time, but for the most part we all had what we needed. We all showed respect for one another and helped each other when someone needed it.
